an Atlantic Challenge
This race is described as "the world's toughest row". The boat is an ocean rowing boat, a Rannoch 25 solo, it's 24 foot long, constructed of carbon fibre. He sleeps in the front, with a gas cooker to heat freeze-dried food by adding water through an electric sea filter powered by solar panels, which also powers the sat nav, radio and satellite phone. The safety equipment includes: life raft, life jacket, 3 EPIRBs(emergency satellite beacons), spare oars and spare parts. Frank Rothwell, 70, the oldest person to row this solo, raising more than £640,000 for dementia research.
The adventurers row more than 3,000 miles west from San Sebastian in La Gomera, Canary to Nelson's Dockyard English Harbour, Antigua & Barbuda.
It's no easy feat! Take a look at some of the facts:
- Each team rows more than 1.5 million oar strokes
- More people have climbed Everest than rowed an ocean
- Waves can measure more than 20ft high
- Rowers burn more than 5,000 calories a day, losing around 12kg in weight.
