Bread and Games!
Gladiatorial combat was a highly popular sport among the ancient Romans. Usually to watch, not to perform. The basic rules for this sport are easy to remember: There are two people in an arena, they get some weapons and they fight to the death.
The concept of bread and games was invented with the idea in mind that if people had food and something to watch, in this case gladiatorial combat, starting a rebellion would be harder.
