Nereids’ Masquerade
Hold your breath! Swim! Dance! Somersault! Smile!
Artistic swimming (aka synchronize swimming) is a sport as ancient as the Olympics. It's an extremely underrated yet one of the most difficult sport, easily overlooked by its elegance. In reality, athletes are trained to make it look effortless and it requires strenuous training in acrobatics, swimming, choreography, flexibility, weight lifting and cardio. They compete upside-down, defy gravity and maintain a big gleaming smile with minimum oxygen!
A 1st century AD poet described it as a group of women performing under water as nereids. Though I see them as nereids masquerading as human athletes. My respect and admiration for them soared during research and I wish to inspire new appreciation for this formidable sport. It was a joy to create and more so to watch my son play with it every day.
I hope you enjoy MOC of life in and around the pool for artistic swimmers. Thank you.
