Marathon
The marathon is a long-distance race with an official length of 42.195 kilometres (26 miles 385 yards) established in 1921, usually run as a road race.
The event was instituted in commemoration of the fabled run of the Greek soldier Philippides (or Pheidippides), a messenger from the Battle of Marathon to Athens (490 BC), who, according to the Greek historian Herodotus, reported the victory of Athens on the Persians.
He ran the entire distance from Marathon to Athens without stopping and burst into the assembly exclaiming "Νενικήκαμεν" ("We have won!"), before collapsing and dying.
In this project I wanted to compare history with present days, mixing them together in a virtual time machine diorama that represents the epic run of Philippides with his message and a modern race in a contemporary city. The Athenian Parthenon is in the background, in its original shape and in what remains of it today.
