Epic Mythological Maya Ballgame
The Maya Hero Twins, Hunahpu and Xbalanque, have entered into a deadly contest with the demons of Xibalba! The brothers have faced many cunningly devised challenges to reach this point, and they can't afford to fail. The lords of the Maya underworld show no mercy to those who have displeased them!
In Mesoamerican cultures, ballgames much like this one were played by two teams in I-shaped courts. The ball was passed between the players and through wall-mounted stone hoops only by use of the hips, and in some variants the knees or elbows. The heavy rubber ball was not to touch the ground. This challenge is reflected in the modern-day game of Ulama, which is played in some parts of Sinaloa, in Mexico.
