Mobile Research Station
When I was a boy, I received my very first space-themed set: a never-seen-before vehicle with a spaceman, sci-fi antennas and a cabin with a computer screen! This model drove me into playing and collecting the first wave of classic space models. I updated this sweet memory with a fresh look and more play functions.
The main upgrade is the cabin, now a full habitat with a removable rooftop, capable of hosting 1-2 minifigs inside, and with a sliding platform underneath, which doubles as a ladder when entering inside.
The second upgrade is the towed payload. Since the dish antenna is now over the cabin, I replaced it with an autonomous robot scout.
The robot has retro-thrusters to jump over obstacles. When jumping, it extends the wheels’ harness. A squared antenna on the head top pairs through a radio link with the same piece on the station, making it a powerful scout. And it’s expressive too: the head and the neck are posable.
What LEGO set or theme inspired your build?
894 Mobile Ground Tracking Station (classic space).
How many LEGO parts did you use on your build?
250 parts (194 for the station, 51 for the robot, 5 for the minifig).
