The Legend of Saint Jordi
Legend has it that, in the Catalan town of Montblanc, a ferocious dragon spread terror. To appease its hunger, the king proposed to choose by lot who would be sacrificed. What he did not expect was that, in the first draw, the chosen one would be his own daughter, Princess Cleodolinda.
As providence would have it, a valiant knight by the name of Jordi happened to pass by. His intervention caused the death of the dragon, whose blood sprouted red roses.
As a reward, the king offered Jordi the hand of his daughter. But he refused, as he had not rescued her in order to conquer her. Since then, and every April 23rd, Catalonia remembers this story.
But how do the dragons remember it, and is it possible that history is somewhat kinder to them than we have been led to believe?
This diorama presents us with a baby dragon playing with Sant Jordi dolls, Cleodolinda and the knight's spirited steed. The dragon's mouth can open and close; his head, neck, tail and limbs can move.
