Coral Reef Nursery Restoration Vessel
Coral reefs provide food and income for at least a billion people, and a home to a quarter of all marine life. However, climate change and human activity have destroyed around 50 percent of coral reefs already, and it is estimated that without immediate intervention, all coral reefs will be gone within 30 years. (UN Environment Programme, 2021).
Coral nursery farms are used to grow healthy coral and place them in struggling coral communities. The coral fragments are usually transplanted onto artificial metal reef structures that help stimulate natural regeneration and recovery. As the coral reproduces and expands, the structure framework provides easy space for the coral to grow, and for marine life to utilise the structure as a home.
The vessel built on Stud.io depicts the placement of a coral-frame in the water. The vessel was once upon a time served the purpose of farming shrimp (Hidden-Side reference), but has been refurbished to help out the coral reef.
