Tribute to Alfred Wegener

In 1912, German scientist Alfred Wegener proposed the hypothesis of continental drift. He thought of this idea when he noticed that the large landmasses of the Earth almost fit together like an enormous jigsaw puzzle, which would mean that they had once formed a combined landmass that had since drifted apart. This was corroborated by the fossil patterns observed across today’s continents. His hypothesis was controversial, however, and was widely rejected by mainstream geology until the 1950s.

In this tribute to Alfred Wegener, turn the crank to see South America and Africa slowly drift to and from each other.
