Vintage Transportation: Cog Railway
Cog steam engines have been pushing passengers up mountain railroads since 1869 with the innovative gear and rack system to keep them from slipping back down the track--even at grades of almost 40 percent. This style of railroad allowed many tourists the opportunity to enjoy mountain views that previously were only available to climbers and hikers.
