Snow Monkeys Chilling in a Hot Pool
I love wildlife, so when Lego Ideas announced its latest challenge, the first thing that came to my mind was the famous Japanese snow monkeys that hang out together in hot pools in winter. Macaques have been chilling in the mountain valleys of the Jigokudani Yaen-koen monkey park in Yamanouchi, Nagano prefecture, for decades. Maybe one day I will go and see them for real, but for now, I'm content to build them in Lego. I started building a rather large model, but soon ran out of bricks, especially pink ones. I ordered some brick but ultimately decided to build a much smaller scale model. I used cat's tails for the monkeys' hair, various curved tiles for the ripples in the pool, and spiky bushes for pine needles. I also found a use for the much maligned BURPs (Big Ugly Rock Pieces), of which I'm secretly quite fond.
