First Date

One quiet morning in a coffee bar, I was enjoying reading a book. It wasn't until I took a sip of my cappucino that I noticed someone had taken a seat next to me.

It was an older man in his seventies with a colorful sweater and a friendly face. I nodded politely and he said: "What book are you reading if you don't mind me asking?"

I told him and showed him the cover. He confided in me that he was a little nervous. "What for?", I asked.

"I'm doing something I haven't done in a long time," he said, "I have a date, for the first time after my wifes passing 8 years ago. I dared to ask a lady from cooking class if she´d liked to have a coffee with me. She´ll be here soon."

I smiled and cheered for his bold move. It reassured him. We chatted a little more and after my last sip, I wished him all the luck. As I left, an engaging curly haired woman walked in.

I´m still glad I turned around. The happiness on the face of the man I barely knew has long stayed with me.
