Mission Beach "Graffiti Shack"
Out on the Point Medanos jetty in South Mission Beach, San Diego, CA, there's a concrete cube structure with open doorways on all sides known as "the Graffiti Shack." There isn't a clear story about what it used to be (the rumor I heard was it used to be a bait stand), but it's now a very popular photography location due to its picturesque location out in the ocean and its ever-changing, very colorful decor. In order to get a photo there, you have to scramble over a few hundred yards of slippery, jaggedy rock formations made even more treacherous by the constant battering of the surf. When I moved to San Diego, I started walking on this beach, and loved showing up and seeing a totally different paint job each weekend. This random object became a personal symbol for my new life in a new city.
