Nature: Violet-Green Swallow
For this alternative nature build, I used unusual techniques that would seem more at home in a mosaic than on a bird, building each major feather group out of small, smooth pieces. For this reason, my model captures much more detail than other LEGO birds, which are usually built using plate sculpting or similar techniques.
The feathers on the back are made of dark green wedge bows, with each row held a half-plate apart by SNOT bricks. I used long tiles to build the primary and secondary feathers and tail, and I captured the thin, knobby shape of a bare tree branch with Technic pieces.
The Violet-green Swallow lives in the western United States, ranging from Alaska to Mexico. It nests in tree and rock cavities and birdhouses, and can often be seen in flocks, foraging for flying insects.
The model is 25 studs long, 21 studs wide, and 36 bricks tall, and its name is Sal. :)
Thank you for checking out my model, and may the best builders win!
