Architecture: Edwardian Terraced House
This is a model of an Edwardian Terraced House built in the UK between 1901 and 1910. In fact, it is the house in which I was born and raised in Leicester.
The Edwardian period was short (only 9 years) but marked a peak in British building standards. Several million homes were built in Britain during this period and this terraced house is a typical example of the architecture of the era. Edwardian properties display a heavy Arts and Crafts Movement influence; carved features are common, along with more decorations on building exteriors.
On this model you can see many of the main characteristics of an Edwardian property:
- A decorative porch with two Roman-style columns
- Bay windows with large sash windows (below) and multi-panels (above)
- Mock-Tudor cladding and painted timbers toward the top of the house
- Hanging tiles above the windows
- Red brickwork
- A small tiled front garden set back from the pavement
- A prominent chimney
