Architecture: The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Athens
The construction of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier became a necessity in Greece, after the end of World War I, as a lot of European Capital started to construct cenotaphs, to honor their warriors who lost their lives on the battlefields but were not found to be buried.
In 1926 there was issued a tender notice, in order to build the monument in between of the old Palaces that now hosts the Hellenic Parliament and the Syntagma Square that lies in the other side of Queen Amalia Avenue.
The proposal of Emmanuel Lazaridis was selected, and the construction started in 1928. Fokionas Roc, was the sculptor of the memorial plate that represents an ancient Greek warrior lying down on earth, and the construction of the monument finished in 1932.
My creation, unifies the facade of the Hellenic Parliament building and the monument of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
