Build: STRANDB33ST

STRANDB33ST is a multi-legged walking creature that uses the Strandbeest walking mechanism, built using the pieces found in the LEGO Mindstorms EV3 set 31313. The legs on the right and left side move independently, so that STRANDB33ST can be steered using the IR remote control. I feel like this model would nicely round out the selection of five core models included in the EV3 kit, which doesn’t include a strictly “walking” robot.

The Strandbeest (pronounced “strondbayst”) mechanism was originally designed by Dutch artist Theo Jansen, in his massive wind-powered walking creatures that combine engineering and art. Strandbeest translates to “beach animal” in Dutch. In his words, “I try to make new forms of life which live on beaches. And they don’t have to eat because they get their energy from the wind.”

STRANDB33ST is a free spirit and dislikes being called a “robot.” He wanders the beaches of the world in search of adventure, and looking for others like him.
