Build: Frizzie the Frilled-Neck Lizard
Frilled-neck lizards are an iconic Australian animal. They have a large frill around their neck, which usually stays folded against their body. When a lizard is frightened, they spread out their frill to scare predators.
We have created our frilled-neck lizard using LEGO SPIKE Prime.
The hero element of our robot is its frill. Our frill operates similar to an umbrella and uses a rack piece to slide the frill up and down, with gearing to speed up the movement.
An ultrasonic on the neck will detect objects within 15cm. We coded the robot to react when a hand is placed in front.
The legs go round and round, like riding a bike, with the front and back legs going up and down at opposite times. We also added small wheels under the neck to provide extra stability.
We noticed that the lizards would often open their frill and turn their heads back and forth in a threatening way. To mimic this we used a turntable that allows the neck to turn around.
