Earth and Moon Orrery

This desktop mechanical model provides a fun and creative way to pass the time.  With a simple turn of a knob, watch the Earth spin and the moon orbit!  Built to keep a consistent scale with the various continents, the globe can easily be detached for an entirely different model.  Measuring at 19 cm long, and 16 cm tall, this 242 piece model can fit in to any shelf, desk, or table available!  Below is a link to a video of the orrery in motion.

When I built this model, I wanted aesthetics and functionality to coincide without having to sacrifice either.  So, I put as much detail into the surface of the earth as I could.  Each stud was meticulously placed to represent real world coastlines, while still maintaining a spherical shape on the model.  As for the rotation mechanism, just 5 simple gears allow the earth and moon to rotate at different speeds.  The black design of the base and exposed mechanisms give the build a complete and finished look.
