LEGO System
This micro build is inspired by a LEGO System set (700/5) from the late ‘50s. The box cover shows three children absorbed in play as they build their own little town. The kids on the box were LEGO’s managing director Godtfred Kirk Christiansen’s daughters Hanne, Gunhild, and son Kjeld (who would later grow up to manage the LEGO company). The builds next to the box are based on some of the different Town Plan models you could build in this set, including a house, a building and a windmill.
The iconic image of the three kids at play was common in LEGO packaging from this period, with variations depending on the country and release year. While you could build all sorts of models with this set, LEGO’s System i Leg (System of Play) remained consistent. Sets like this popularized the idea of an interlocking brick system, which is still in use in LEGO sets today.
This micro build represents LEGO’s long heritage of using our imagination to spark creativity and rebuild the world.
