6973 Ice Planet Tri-Cruiser

My favourite set is 6973 which was from Ice Planet 2002 and released in 1993. This was its name in the Australian catalogues - I've since learnt it was known as the Deep Freeze Defender in the US and the Ice Cruiser Zycon IV in the UK, and I'd be interested to hear any other names.

I had a lot of fun recreating it in 1:2 scale, and managed to include nearly every function of the original:
  • You can launch a rocket with satellite from the middle section (while the rear section is still attached).
  • I spent the most time on the rear hold. You unlock the doors by moving the black engines out of the way, then as the doors slide the small flyer is raised into a launching position.
  • The small flyer can carry the rocket, this time with a stud connection instead of using magnets.
  • It is modular; the two cockpits and the two other sections all detach and you can connect a cockpit to the rear section.

The original has 393 pieces (not including minifigures) and this one has 366.
