Scene: Meeting Tom Bombadil
Frodo, Sam, Pippin and Merry first meet Tom Bombadil in the Old Forest during a disastrous encounter with Old Man Willow, in which Merry and Pippin are engulfed by the ancient tree. Sam try to burn the giant tree while Frodo starts to run calling for help. Then Frodo first hears Tom, speaking in his whimsical chant, on his way home from collecting water lilies for his dear Goldenberry. Tom then follows Frodo and commands Old Man Willow to release to two hobbits and invites them all to his home for some much needed rest. During the hobbits stay Frodo tells Tom all about the One Ring and Tom asks to inspect it, which Frodo willing allows. To Frodo's amazement the One Ring has no affect on Tom, even once he slips it on his finger.
Tom is one of the most fascinating characters of Middle-Earth! It is said he is one of the oldest and perhaps even older than Middle Earth itself.
