Scene: Smaug Smells a Thief
“Well thief! I smell you and I feel your air. I hear your breath. Come along! Help yourself again, there is plenty and to spare..”
The conversation between Smaug and Bilbo is one of my favourite passages throughout the Lord of the Rings universe. I love the tension that is built up both in the book and the film. The destruction that Smaug wreaks on Erebor as he chases Bilbo was the inspiration for the broken architecture. I wanted to use the destroyed stonework to try and create dynamic movement to heighten the relationship between the old dragon and the fleeing hobbit.
