The fate of Middle Earth is directly linked to the Cracks of Doom. Sauron forged and imbued the One Ring here, to rule them all. After cutting the ring from Sauron's hand, Isildur was not willing to throw it back into the fires, where it came from. Isildur died shortly after in an ambush and the ring was thought lost. After two and a half millenia the One Ring was rediscovered and finally destroyed by Frodo, Sam and Smeagol.
