Scene: The Scouring of the Shire
After destroying the One Ring and witnessing Aragorn's coronation, Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin returned to the Shire. But when they returned, they found it monstrously changed, with bandits imposing their laws and polluting factories in place of pleasant hobbit houses. Little by little, they discovered that the Shire and its inhabitants had been subjugated by Saruman who had managed to escape from Orthanc. Driven by revenge, the white wizard and his servant Grima have established a regime of industrial terror, destroying the Shire's environment with its black smoke spewing factories.
Drawing on their experience in the war against Sauron, Frodo and his friends inspired the Hobbits to revolt and end Saruman's reign. Out of pity, Frodo decided to spare the white wizard and his servant and chase them away, but Grima, in a rage, slit Saruman's throat.
This story is the penultimate chapter of the last volume of Tolkien's literary trilogy but was never adapted by Peter Jackson.
