Scene: The Destruction of the Trees

Treebeard and the Ents are some of my favourite characters from the Lord of the Rings universe. I have chosen to depict the poignant moment when Treebeard, Merry & Pippin come across Sarumans destruction of Fangorn forest. I wanted to capture some of the horror and sadness on Treebeards face as he witnesses the stumps of his former fellow forest dwellers. 

This sight moves Treebeard to call a ‘hasty’ Entmoot which, after three days of discussion, leads the Ents to join the battle against Saruman. This proves decisive in the destruction of Isengard as well as the battle for Helms Deep with the powerful Ents and the Huorns joining the fight. With their punches that can crumple iron like tinfoil, and roots that can tear apart solid rock like breadcrusts!
