Scene: Samwise's Poem in Cirith Ungol

Samwise, bearing the ring, searches all of Cirith Ungol and cannot find Mr. Frodo. Despairing, he plops down in that dark, cold tower and begins to sing—as one does.

It's my favorite Tolkien poem. Samwise talks about how somewhere far away, it's probably spring and the rivers are rushing (here represented with a microscale Rivendell). Then he describes a nighttime scene of beautiful beech trees, which made me think of Lothlorien (shown in microscale beneath giant mallorns).

Sam laments that he is in utter darkness, in Mordor, where he cannot see the stars or the sun. But, in his stubborn, hobbitish way, he clings to hope:

above all shadows rides the Sun
and Stars for ever dwell:
I will not say the Day is done,
nor bid the Stars farewell.

The model is on a spinning base, showing the poem as it turns. Over both the beautiful places and Sam's current despair hangs that star of hope. It's connected to a light block hidden in the center of the model (visible in the top-view photo).
