Ingenuity Station: Dame Dame
(DAH-mee DAH-mee)
Afrofuturism is about culture. It’s about blending history, science fiction, and fantasy to create amazing works of art, literature, architecture, music, and more.
The Adinkra symbols were developed in West Africa and can symbolize different concepts and behavior attributes. The symbol featured in this build is called "Dame Dame" (meaning “checkered” in Akan) and it represents intelligence, ingenuity, and strategy. The symbol gets its shape from an actual board game called Dame Dame that requires those attributes.
When I use LEGO as a way to look through the lens of Afrofuturism, I see an opportunity to combine science fiction, fantasy, history, ingenuity, and play to create a space station in the shape of the Dame Dame board. This deep space station isn’t just a place to live and work, it’s a place to play and learn. It represents the culture of the African diaspora intersecting with the exploration of space.
