Starship Mask of Exploration and Prosperity
When I heard the prompt for this contest, I immediately knew what I wanted to do. The beautiful hand-carved masks from the tribes in Africa to me, would be the perfect representation of the culture and prosperity that Afrofuturism defines. Just as soon as I had decided on that, I also realized that the strong edges of the masks would be a perfect base for an Afrofuturistic starship to explore the cosmos.
When designing the ship, I wanted to stay true to the look, shape, and feel of the many different varieties of masks found throughout the African continent. I was particularly inspired by the wooden masks of the Chokwe people. The Chokwe masks are distinct in their thin-slit eyes and the triangular symbol on the forehead, as well as the wooden braids down the sides. These masks represent wealth and power, and for an Afrofuturistic society, this would be the perfect shape to incorporate into a starship!
I hope you enjoy the design!
