Pohatu vs. Antroz | BIONICLE
The sets that cemented my love for LEGO design were 8687 - Toa Pohatu (shown in orange) and 8691 - Antroz (shown in red), released together in 2008. Their inventive rotor/pincer function and imposing naturalistic looks respectively, got my imagination running. Paired with each other, they both shine better.
To retain the features of the original builds with modern parts, I chose some twists. Pohatu gained thruster boots, hands, and takes inspiration from his pilot version with hints of silver and a detailed visor. Antroz uses a hatch to contain and release his shadow leeches, and takes a more bat-like shape.
A key feature of most any BIONICLE set was removable masks, which in-lore gave the wearer a unique ability. I stress-tested Pohatu's mask design, and aimed to make both masks sturdy yet characterful. The heads they attach to use transparent parts from front to back to funnel light for a glow, and use two colors to make the eyes pop.
I hope the cool-factor and mystery are as appealing!
