Stud Orbitals
Have you ever wondered how bricks bond to form MOCs? Turns out after countless years of research, it turns out it is quite similar to how atoms bond to form molecules.
Instead of a "cloud" of electrons, it's a cloud of studs. Instead of electrons with up and down spins, you have studs and anti-studs.
You may notice that these clouds look quite different from electron orbitals, and that is because they aren't. They're stud orbitals!
This build includes a state-of-the-art, large-scale model of our current understanding of these stud orbitals, as well as a simplified diagram of the brick and its studs.
What kind of discoveries and new building techniques can this knowledge unlock for us? How many new possibilities are made available? What implications does this idea infer? Should you think about the parallel of atoms and bricks and electrons and studs too much?
Truly, some of the greatest mysteries of our time.
