Base: Orbital Habitat Ring
Exploring the cosmos can be tough! What if we only find inhospitable planets and empty space? Thankfully, many great scientists already figured out the solution: giant space megastructures serving as bases to colonise the galaxy!
I recreated perhaps the most iconic of these space habitats: orbital rings that can span hundreds of kilometres, rotating to ensure artificial gravity and even a full atmosphere kept in place by the centrifugal force. A day/night cycle would be also provided by aligning the orbit with a star or by using mirror systems, creating an earth-like environment even in deep space.
It was a really fun challenge to recreate such a gigantic structure in Lego microscale! I used hinge plates and wedges to build a seamless ring structure, in the new Space theme color palette. The habitat itself is then built with twelve perfectly aligned 4x4 sections that reuse multiple parts and colors in different configurations to depict urban, natural and agricultural landscapes.
