ART Contest Entry: Sunrise

Lego is a hands-on art medium, but often our creations come attached to signs that say "Don't Touch." I wanted to create something different, a piece of art where touch is not only encouraged but required.

My mother-in-law has gone blind over the past few years due to macular degeneration. Nonetheless, I figured she could still build with Lego, and together we built small projects - many times with me actively closing my eyes. 

It was after these experiences that I decided to create tactile pieces of Lego art. "Sunrise" was my first successful piece.

Many people who have difficulty seeing can still perceive bright colors or changes in brightness, such as during a sunrise. Thus, the piece attempts to recreate a sunrise through touch, growing in size and with different textures.
