Animated Red Lion Reveal!
My inspiration for this entry is that Voltron is an animated series, so I built an animated scene!
As you turn the crank each section moves at its own speed creating the illusion of multi-dimensional animation. Slowly, the volcano turns and gives way to Voltron's Red Lion staring at you ready to fly.
The rocky front section moves the fastest, with the middle section moving a bit slower. The rear horizontal section moves slower still and the backdrop scene moves slowest of all. This is accomplished with a single axle that has 4 different gear sizes built in-line (40, 24, 12, 8). A pair of gearboxes transfer the power from the crank to the vertical and horizontal driving axles.
The scene is built up on technic treads with alternating 1x4 and 1x3 plates. The final image details the speed relation between each section.
The images submitted here are the best for the contest, but I will share more images in the comments later. They won't count but will give you an idea of how things work.
