Hammond B3 Organ with Leslie Speaker
Flip that switch and get those mellow tones!
The Hammond organ was invented in 1935 as a cheaper alternative to church pipe organs. It attempted to recreate the sound of pipe organs from a current rotating a metal tonewheel against a magnetic pickup. The Leslie speaker was invented in the late 30s as an amplifier for the Hammond organ. By rotating the speaker's tweeter and woofer, it created a natural, vibrato sound. The Hammond and the Leslie became a match made in heaven. Players could control the tremolo of the Leslie right from their Hammond console to articulate the sounds they played on their organ.
The Hammond organ's marriage to the Leslie became a staple of jazz and rock music of the sixties, seventies and eighties. The Hammond B3 was flexible in almost any style of music and was used by the likes of Jon Lord of Deep Purple, Keith Emerson, Richard Holmes, Booker T and of course, the legendary Jimmy Smith.
