Satellite Spinner

Give this build a spin and it will continue to rotate for up to two minutes before stopping. Let's take a quick look at the science that makes it possible.

Low friction - The spinning component of this model is sitting on the end of a paint brush piece, which results in just a tiny amount of friction between the moving parts.

Weight distribution - The large satellite build sits closer to the pivot point which means it's applying the same torque as the much lighter UFO and astronaut. Having the weight on the outside also gives the spinning component more rotational inertia. As you spin it, the increased rotational inertia results in more angular momentum.

Stability - The centre of gravity sits below the pivot point, which allows it to remain balanced when spinning or when stationary.

Put these things together and you have a fun and mesmerising little model (190pcs) that spins and spins.

Thank you for checking out my entry! Below is a video demonstration of the movement.
