Mariner's Astrolabe

Astrolabes are one of the oldest astronomical instruments invented by mankind.

Having their origin in Ancient Greece, their main purpose is to calculate astronomical positions precisely: by rotating the rule around the central pivot, one could measure the altitude of celestial bodies, which in turn had dozens of possible uses.

This device was later perfected by Muslim astronomers, only to be picked up further on by Europeans: eventually, we ended up with the Mariner's Astrolabe.
The latter has a similar function, but with its main use being calculating a ship's latitude by rotating the alidade around the pivot.

This invention, along with the compass, allowed for the Europeans to travel, discover and conquer around the World, in lands unknown to them. And it is because it was such a simple yet revolutionary instrument that I decided to feature it.

That being said, I hope you enjoy it!
