Shakin' Water

Water is critical to life. The molecule is small, only formed by three atoms, yet displaying many unique properties.

In this model I tried to present one of the internal movements of a water molecule. On the right there is an enlarged model of water. The red dish represents the oxygen while the white ones are the two hydrogen atoms. By rotating the handle, the molecule could do a 'scissoring' movement (or known as H-O-H bending). This kind of vibration can be captured by infrared (IR) spectroscopy. On the left there is an IR spectrometer on the desk, connected to a computer. The IR spectrum of water can be measured and displayed on the screen, then viewed by the scientist.
