Trammel of Archimedes

This is a trammel of Archimedes, also know as a Kentucky do-nothing, nothing grinder, do nothing machine, or smoke grinder. This version is octagonal with four shuttles. As the handle is turned, each shuttle moves in a straight line across the trammel, back and forth, each narrowly avoiding the others. While, in actuality, it accomplishes nothing, it is somehow strangely satisfying to use.

This particular model has dots on top of the handle, each of which charts a different shape. The blue dot describes a perfect circle, while the others make varying forms of ellipses.

This model has 248 parts. It was designed digitally on Studio and a prototype was built to test it. (The prototype is shown in the last picture and the video below, though it doesn't have all the same parts and/or colors of the final design.)
