Cabinet of Curiosities
The gathering of unusual objects and assembling them in Kunstkammers traces its roots back to the Middle Ages. This small box is just the nucleus of a collection by a young enthusiast. The girl is not aware of how valuable some of her exhibits are:
Corallium rubrum - a coral brought from Spanish voyages. This red coral is used in jewellery.
Seriatopora sp. - another coral, purchased from the Far East.
Iron Meteorite - this stone has an interesting structure, is very heavy, and, to the girl's amazement, attracts a magnet!
Citrine - this naturally orange variety of quartz sailed from Brazil.
Pyrite - Known as "fool's gold" due to its colour resembling the precious metal. It forms natural cubes.
Saucerottia tobaci - a species of hummingbird, this stuffed specimen was caught on the Tobago.
Morpho helenor - a large butterfly, captured in Argentina.
Venus figurine - a small anthropomorphic figurine purchased in Lower Austria.
Ammonite - an extinct, fossilized cephalopod, cut and polished.
