Sensu (Japanese Folding Fan)
The iconic folding fan, widely known today by millions of people, was originally invented in Japan around the 9th century.
Sensu (扇子), as they are natively known, were traditionally used exclusively by nobility, monks and the samurai class. While Sensu maintain their 1200 year old traditions, the folding fan is used primarily today for decorational purposes and to stay cool from the summer heat.
To Celebrate Japanese Culture, my Sensu depicts a Japanese Cherry Blossom, and utilizes black to symbolize elegance while the yellow represents nature. The ornate stand that holds the folding fan is entirely red to symbolize peace. This design is constructed of 771 bricks, stands 23 cm (9 in) tall, and 33 cm (13 in) wide.
Aside from my LEGO Sensu, there are three types of traditional Japanese folding fans…the hiōgi (wooden fan), the kamisen (paper fan), and the kinusen (silk fan). These traditional Sensu are hand crafted by skillful artisans.
