Playable Robot Arm
Science, engineering, technology, math, it all comes together in this playable robot arm!
I created this together with Brick_Wim and have his authorisation to submit this idea.
We found it important that this build was something that was playable to encourage adults but also kids to learn about the essentials of technics, because that is what STEM is all about.
The operating mechanism is straight forward, there are master cylinders connected to the operating levers. Slave cylinders are connected to the moveable parts of the robot arm. Thanks to the pneumatic laws, the slave cylinders will expand when the master cylinders retract and vice versa.
However, because the volume of air compresses more than when working with a fluid, the master cylinders have a bigger volume than the slave cylinders.
My 5 year old really loves playing with this build. The look on his face when showing hem the master slave principle was unforgettable. It was a nice introduction to STEM for him!
