Roll to Believe

This diorama honors memories made with my friends and family, crowded around tables too small for our imaginations.

On the left is a classic tavern scene. Three adventurers are back from their foray, planning the next. A bard plays near a trophy taken long ago by the innkeeper - an old dwarf who watches and recalls his days on the road.

On the right are children giving life to the game. Players listen to their dungeon master set the scene. A parent brings rations for the rowdy company and a younger sister catches a glimpse of another world. The stairs function as a dice roller and lift up for dice storage.

In older rules, one would “roll to disbelieve” to discern illusion from reality. I remembered this as I built, and it brought to mind the importance of immersion in D&D. Our characters are wary of illusions, but players dive right into them and create legends.

I no longer roll to disbelieve. The game has new rules and the reason I roll has new meaning.

Now, I roll to believe.
